Ping me on 20forbeers or poindexter@realitycheckbbs.org, I had a couple
of 720XDs that I repurposed. Might be able to answer questions on the 730xd. They were great fun, I loved them.

If you do some digging around inside, you might have bootable 2 SD card slots as well.

Will absolutely do. One of my biggest 'issues' is; yea I have 12 3.5" bays on the front backplane - and 2 2.5" on the rear. But all are managed by the Perc 730 Mini... I may buy another HBA/RAID card; but I'm playing around with how to pass bays to TrueNAS SCALE on the hardware level. I normally pass the entire RAID card, but in this machine it handles 12-18 bays.

I've also been playing around with just passing individual drives to a VM as scsi1, scsi2, scsi3, etc in the Proxmox XXX.conf file - this isn't as clean as passing PCIe passthrough, but it might let me just pass 8 bays and use the others for other things.

I don't need to be bleeding edge - I intend to add a PCI3 NVME card for super-fast shares... the bulk of my storage is OK to be a little lagged.

But I wanna do it as best I can - I've decided to test for an EXTENDED period of time before I ever think about migrating my two other servers into the 730xd - I'm just stoked to be here.

Supposedly it's no good to mix RAIDs.. You should either let the card do its own array thing like it would normally do, or replace/remove it entirely. The latter option might be better if you're _actually_ worried about the data and want to be able to put the drives into other systems. If you're just messin' around tho, who cares :).

No, this will be in production as a very important NAS.

But... are you stating that its not suggested to leave the Perc 730 Mini as the front 12 drive bays card and adding a second complete HBA to control the other 'rail' - the other SAS/SATA port??

I'll research before, for sure. While I would prefer to pass the HBA completely to a TrueNAS VM, I won't lose TOO MUCH i/o if I just pass individual drives to the TrueNAS VM w/o PCI pasthrough.

I want to do it the right way, so I appreciate you mentioning this. I could also take the rear 2 2.5" bays off the Perc 730 and just use the physical SATA connections on the mobo for them... decisions decisions...
