Although I've been a console/command line guy since I met
my first love in 1981 (a Commodore PET), I'd prefer a GUI
QWK reader. ..

I don't know much about Fidonet, except to read messages. From a quick search, I think this would only be helpful if I was a Fidonet node, which I'm not.
But at least it has an aress book!

One only needs to be a "point node", which just means you need a sysop to set this up for you on their end. It's pretty quick and easy.
If you can figure out the software, you are welcome to point from here.
