Now California taxpayers are flipping the bill.

Sure, if you discount the natural wonders, snow-capped mountains, miles
of beaches, abundant agriculture, tech industry, the center of the entertainment industry, museums and culture, incredible public and
private universities, and the 4th largest economy in the WORLD, it's a terrible place to live.

Then why are you planning to retire to an European country?

Because everyone knows it's a terrible place to live.

i understand it's a pyramid scheme of a sorts. i just prefer it to people Getting govt handouts.

The "government handouts" are much cheaper.

Before you bring up "wait times", my mom has been waiting for brain surgery to treat a severe tremor for at least a year or two, we have them here too, and they're just as bad, if not worse...

I thought I'd explained it before. My wife's family lives there and
she's spent most of her adult life in the states. Now that my parents
have passed, it's important to me that we spend time with her parents
while we can. We're interested in finding a village with a walkable
high street as we retire, as keeping active is an important part of
quality of life, and having a public transit system where you can get
most anywhere without a car will be nice.

I'm living on the California coast, bought when it was cheap(er) and
have a 2.75% 30-year fixed mortgage. I've got it pretty good,
    comparatively.
