PC/X-Magazine is free for everyone and spreading is encouraged. If you
want to have a printed copy of the current issue (or from prior
issues), call our BBS and post a message to us so we can work some-
  thing out.

We will try to make this a very interesting zine with all kinds of in-
formation that's usefull for (almost) anyone running PC-Express(c).
Besides this textfile we incorporate much more in the archives that we
make such as a list of all the BBS's in the world that are using PC-
Express(c) (registered and unregistered), a source file for an utility
that someone has coded (and one that works :-)), some ANSI- & ASCII-
  texts, a vote sheet etc.

In the magazine itself we'll try to hold on to the following contents:

  a) General information,
  b) What's in the archive that you've got (downloaded),
  c) Editorial section,
  d) Other information,
  e) New things, bugs and idea's,
  f) Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's),
  g) Short story (optional),
  h) Source section (MugSHot),
  i) Tool reports,
  j) Released utilities / tools to be coded,
  k) Registrations and changes,
  l) How to register your copy of PC-Express(c),
  m) Distributors of this zine,
  n) End notes.

We'll do much be we can't do it alone; if you have a source-file that
you want to share with others so that they too can learn to code, if
you have a textfile with important information, if you have an addi-
tion to the list with (un-)registered BBS's in your country etc.
please give it to one the people that is able to incorporate it in the
next issue of the magazine. We all must try to make this zine interes-
  ting for us all.

When you want to contact the author with submissions, your vote, com-
plaints, idea's etc. write a message to one of the above mentioned In-
ternet addresses, call our BBS or mail us at the following address:

  : Part -1- : News & other information.
  :.---------:---------------------------------------------------------.
  `----------'
      . . : Welcome to PCE-Magazine issue 14. A big part of this
: _:__ | release is dedicated to the new version of PCE. The
      | . / /\ new version (v1.30) and this issue are released at
- --- | :/ / / -- approximately the same time. In the next issue (15),
      | /___/ / | you will find an info file from the author of PCE,
:__\___\/ .| Michael Feilen, about the release. For now I can say
/\ __ \.| that it has been quite a busy month here at X-TReMe.
\ \ \ \ A lot of things happened in the last few months and
:\ \___\___\ PCE has expanded enormously to be one of the best
. \/___/___/ BBS's with a lot of support. Then several programs
      | / _____/\ add a lot of options and features to the new version
/ __/\_\/ of PCE, for instance TheTag v1.20. Many of you al-
      /___/\_\/: ready tried out v1.00 or v1.05 but now v1.20 is a-
\___\/__..| vailable for everyone in the world. We have inserted
/\ __ \ | many things into this update, please read the accom-
\ \ \ \ panied documentation if you want to know it all.
 - -- \ \_______\ Next, PCEKiT has been updated to v2.67 and as of PCE
\/_______/p! v1.30 it will be a part of the PCE-archive. When you
      | . : want to install PCE totally, take care of having a
: . . | few MB free on your HardDisk, because it can become
. : rather big when PCEKiT and TheTag are also installed
. on your HD. PCE is devided into two archives simply
because of the fact that one single archive wouldn't
support the 1,44 MB floppy disks. For a small amount of time we thought
of creating three archives to support the 720 KB floppy disks, but we
think that nowadays most people use 1,44 MB floppy disks so that should
not be a problem. Next thing is that all textfiles for PCE are comple-
tely rewritten for v1.30 and the documentation for PCE itself is now a-
vailable in three different languages. That also goes for all the ANSI-
and ASCII-screens and for the text used by the BBS itself, so we can
say that PCE supports multiple languages. All of this can be noticed in
a more direct way by the users, but it's important that the BBS itself
has no bugs. All the fixes etc. are not mentioned but believe me when I
say that a lot of (small) fixes have been made. If you want to know
more about it, I suggest that you read the documentation of PCE and/or
the WhatsNew.doc. You can also read furhter in this issue for informa-
 tion about the new version.

On with the show. Caligula asked me to mention the new telephone number
of his BBS since he has moved to a new location; the new number (which
is also mentioned in pce_tot.lst) is: +31-412651065,

Coke joined as a distribution site for this zine; the data of his BBS
is mentioned beneath at the distributors part. Welcome Coke!

The files "network.pce" and "pcenet.001" have been removed temporarely
because of the fact that they are going be worked out and are mentioned
for pc/x v1.40; v1.30 has JAM facilities, but a maximum of one area in
each conference is available; in order to have (multiple) networks each
conference must hold more of them. We will have this shortly so that
we can start testing the new network. We will keep you informed about
the progress. This project has to be one of the first things for v1.40
because then we can start working on the mailer and the mailscanner/
tosser. We hope to program them in time so that they can be released
 together with v1.40.

                           .

  Dear SysOp Colleague,

last summer I started on a filetagger and continued working on it in my
free time. Now nine months and 2 releases later I have finished the project.

But it is no longer a simple tagger, TheTag has expanded like a blowfish
and can now take control of your pc/x bbs.

As TheTag is so in tune with PcExpress, the author of PcExpress, Michal
Feilen, has decided to include the demo version of TheTag in the PcExpress
  v1.30 package.

The demo version of TheTag v1.20 is also available on X-TReME BBS.

Please take a few minutes to browse here and see how TheTag with all it's
features can make your life easier.
I personally guarantee you won't be disappointed.

: The cursorkey that the user can use for re-displaying the commands :
: entered doesn't work that good; only the last command can be re- :
: displayed, commands prior to the last command can't be recalled by :
: by means of the cursorkey. :
  : :

: When a user calls the BBS and doesn't know the password, pc/x :
: kicks the user but writes that this user logged in. :
  : :
  : (SUNNY) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: When a user flags files - and therefor has a flagdatabase - and :
: wants to download the selected files, i get to see quite often: :
: "FileSpec(1): _" instead of the question if the user wants to :
: download the files. When the user presses <enter> and returns to :
: the BBS and hits the "d" again, pce works okay. Also performing :
: another option (like "a" or "fr" etc.) after the first time lets :
: pce work okay the second time. Probably something goes wrong when :
: pce wants to access the flagdatabase the first time... :
  : :

: When a user has downloaded all the flagged files and wants to log- :
: off, pce says that this user still has flagged files, but that :
: can't be because the user has downloaded all of them... :

The release version of pc/x probably won't have these "errors", but
these were found in the last few weeks and mentioned just to let you
  know.

Maybe it sounds a little bit strange, but we've already worked out the
options etc. that're going to be implemented into PCE v1.40. If you
like it, maybe in the next issue we can present these textfiles and
examples ANSI's/ASCII's to you so that you know what we're working on.

                                            .

Q: Are there any ftp-sites where we can download pc/x tools?

A: Since april 1996 there's an ftp-site where you can download almost
all the PC-Express(c) tools that're released. The ftp-address is:

     ftp:mindweb.com/pce

   What's new in PC-Express(c) v1.30 //
 - ----------------------------------//- -

 .---.---------------------------------------------------------------------.
 : + : There's a new option in the "Wait-for-caller"-screen called a JAM :
: : messagebase packer which can be activated by means of the DEL-key. :
: : This packer only starts if there are no users online at your BBS. :
: : In the Config.exe is an option by which you can define whether only :
: : the deleted messages should be removed or also the received messa- :
 : : ges. :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : There are some computers that have not much EMS available, therefor :
: : there's an option in the Config.exe with which the SysOp can define :
: : that PC-Express(c) should first try to use XMS before it starts to :
: : use EMS when, for example, starting a door (XMS is faster). The PC- :
: : Express(c) ".ovl" file is still loaded into EMS :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : + : There's a new option build into the Config.exe called UploadTime- :
: : CreditIndex. With this index PC-Express(c) calculates how much time :
: : will be added to the time-account of a user after an upload. An in- :
: : dex of, for example, 150 means that when a user uploaded for 20 mi- :
 : : nutes, another 10 minutes will be added to the time-account (50%) :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : Fixed a multi-node bug with the swap-routines. PC-Express(c) used :
: : the same swap-file on all the nodes so errors occured when doors :
 : : were started :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : Added an (p)rivate option when a file was uploaded so that this :
: : file will automatically be moved to the HOLD-directory and the full :
 : : File_Id.diz will be added to the Dir0.txt :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : Made an option in the Config.exe with which you can set "statusbar :
: : visible on the screen" as default or not. Ofcourse the visualisa- :
: : tion of the statusbar can always be changed by means of using the :
 : : F10-key :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : The SysOp is able to go straight to the Config.exe program when PC- :
: : Express(c) is waiting for a call; there's no need to exit the BBS :
 : : anymore :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : Fixed a bug in the upload-routine; if a user entered the descrip- :
: : tion before the file was uploaded, the description was lost after :
 : : completing the upload :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : + : Installed a complete new "s"-command; now it holds more information :
 : : and looks more "/X-like" :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : Fixed a bug in the bulletins :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : In the Config.exe is a new option where you can enable or disable :
: : the auto-comment that a user has to send when calling your BBS :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : + : There is a new option in the Config.exe with which you're able to :
: : define the maximum days after which the user has to change his/her :
: : password; if the number is set to "0", the option is disabled :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : + : PC-Express(c) now supports voice-connects. If pc/x located a voice- :
 : : connect, it'll start a batchfile called "VoiceX.bat", where "X" is :
 : : the Node-number. With this option it's possible to start a voice- :
 : : mailbox :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : If an uploaded archive has no file_id.diz (and if you have enabled :
: : the option in the Config.exe), pc/x asks whether the description :
: : that the user writes should be incorporated as a file_id.diz into :
 : : the archive. PC-Express(c) supports the following archive-types: :
 : : ZIP/LHA/LZH/ARJ/DMS/ARC/PAK. If the user enters (y)es, pc/x calls :
: : the batchfile "Pack_Diz.bat", with which you're able to inset the :
 : : File_Id.diz into the archive. PC-Express(c) will add the beneath :
: : mentioned variables to this batchfile: :
 : : :
 : : %1 = Extension of the archive (e.g. .zip) :
 : : %2 = File_Id.diz, including path :
 : : %3 = Archive, including path :
 : : %4 = The Node-number :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : Fixed a small bug in the NoWanted.txt routine :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : Added a new variable called %4 when using an external protocol; :
: : this is the upload path :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : Added an option in the Config.exe program with which you can allow :
: : the same user to be on more then 1 node at the same time :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : Fixed a bug in the usereditor (week and month statistics one field :
 : : longer) :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : Fixed the swap routine; now it swaps to EMS/XMS/Disk :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : Added a new MCI code called @PAUSE@. If you call this MCI code pc/x :
 : : will wait for a <space> :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : Tried to fix some bugs in the Event-routine, i hope it works better :
 : : now :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : In the prior versions, when you pressed "HOME", pc/x started the :
 : : batchfile called "Terminal.bat". From now on, pc/x will execute a :
 : : batchfile called "TermX.bat", where "X" is the Node-number. In :
: : this way it's easier to create batchfiles for each node :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : During the download the SysOp can see the current file number and :
: : the total number of files in the big transfer window :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : If you uploaded a dupe, pc/x moved the file into the HOLD-directory :
: : but posted the description into the file listing of the upload di- :
: : rectory; this is solved now :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : + : Updated my APRO library from v2.01 to v2.03 :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : + : PC-Express(c) has a search routine to search for a string in the :
 : : message-base. With the "rs"-command (read-search) you can enable :
: : this function. You can choose whether to look in the message hea- :
: : ders, message bodies or both. PC-Express(c) wil search for the gi- :
: : ven string in all the messages that exist in this conference :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(

{-Allround PcExpress DIRX.TXT file handling.}

A small summary what the pkDIRX unit can do:

 - Reads dirx files from start to end (normal listing) or from end to
   start (reverse listing).
 - Real reverse reading together with text file positioning it makes
   this unit quite fast.
 - Searching dirx entries for keywords or filenames with wildcards.
 - Searching dirx entries on a specific date or a number of days old.
 - Jumping withing dirx files.
 - Output of an 'animation' while reading dirx files.
 - Support for CD-ROM conferences.

A few improvements were made, line changes are marked.
This version is compatible with MUG-NuKE v1.00.

  ---( Begin )----------------------------------------------------------

One product out of the "blue"-series brought to life by DOC HOLiDAY
is what we've reviewed for you; the program is called Blue!CPU.exe and
creates an ANSI - and ASCII output file with the first 10 computer ty-
pes that are installed on your BBS and the number of users that have
such a computer. DOC HOLiDAY says that he created these tools for his
BBS and that's probably the reason that you can't select and/or adjust
anything; the only thing that you can do is run it... the output files
are mostly in blue and there is some data mentioned inside the files:
  - computer type: The first 10 computer-types that you have installed
(and only the first 10), - the number of users that are using such a
computer and - the number of users shown as a percentage. Maybe for
some SysOp's this tool can do the work but for most other persons it's
worthless. Maybe someone asked DOC HOLiDAY if he could release it? The
tools itself work okay, but add a little bit more so that other people
can use them too for their BBS's.

Some other things: You can place this program e.g. in the system.bat
or in the Event?.bat. Execute it just by typing the filename+<enter>.
The output files are called "blue!cpu.ans"(~.asc) and are put in the
directory where the program is located.

Conclusion: Nice tool for 1 (or 2) board(s)...

Short desc. : Display time & date in pce v1.0

  ---( Begin )----------------------------------------------------------

This tool from DOC HOLiDAY serves to display the time and date as they
are installed on the BBS-computer. When you've installed a "t"-door,
you can add "blue!t&d.exe -n%1" to the file "t.bat" and when the user
presses "t" the door is started. It searches for a file called "blue!-
t&d.cfg" in which the SysOp can install the colours that are used for
displaying the time and date as well as the time - & date displayment
and the use of a screen clear when the door is started. Beneath is the
  output text:

| Hello The Doctor, |
| now it is 15:15:59. We have Thursday May 23, 1996! |
| |
| Btw, you have 98 minutes left before the system hangs up. |
`------------------------------------------------[ SMASH A KEY TO CONTiNUE ]--'

The user name and the minutes left before the systems hangs up won't
be displayed when you start the door from the DOS-prompt.

This is it: User name, time, date and minutes left. Hitting any key
brings the user back to the BBS-prompt. A small tool, but it does its
  work okay.
